The petals sit on top of each other rather than beside each other. That's what makes this look like carved layers instead of a flat circle, and it's a single technique doing all the work.
Overlay crochet means working into the front loops of an earlier round, so each new ring of petals lifts clear of the fabric underneath and casts a real shadow. Nothing is sewn on. Nothing is stuffed. The dimension comes entirely from where the hook goes.
It's worked in the round from a small centre outwards, one colour per round, so you get a finished result at the end of every round and a clear stopping point whenever you want one. Stop early and it's a coaster. Keep going and it's a table topper. Keep going further in thicker yarn and it's a small rug.
The scalloped outer edge finishes it without needing a separate border.

⚙️ How It Works
- Download instantly. Your PDF arrives the moment your order is confirmed — nothing is shipped.
- Start at the centre. One colour per round, working outwards.
- Add the overlay layers. Work into the front loops of earlier rounds and watch the petals lift off the surface.
- Stop where you like, then block. Blocking is what opens the scalloped edge and flattens the layers properly.
